Police Misconduct: New Orleans Killings

 

During Hurricane Katrina New Orleans was in a state of turmoil. There was a lot of violence going on. One day Six New Orleans police officers was said to have killed two unarmed civilians a few days after the flood.

This case is known as the Danziger Bridge case. The shooting led to two innocent civilians dead and four wounded badly. These were two totally different shootings that took place on September 4 of 2005. This led to the officers following up with a guilty pleas and them admitting to trying to cover up the shootings.

Police Misconduct: The BART Killing

     An unarmed civilian on the Oakland subway was shot purposly by who is now a former police officer. As well as the officer helping another officer who was seen mistreating a group  of  men who they thought was fighting on the train. The officer who was later udentified as Johannes  Mehserle age 28 was charged with the Murder in the New Year's Day  2009 shooting of the innocent Oscar J. Grant III. His killing cause a lot of people to turn to violence in Oakland,California.
     Also said in court by David R. Stein that minutes before the shooting there was a problem where Mehserle's fellow officers shouted a racial slur at Grant. They said that it wasn't needed because Grant and his friend were already on the floor being detained. So do to this and his killing the Menhserle and the other officers were sentenced to two years.

Police Brutality: How To Go About Dealing With Police Brutality

Over the course of years the stats on Police Brutality had risen to an all time high. So when you come into a problem such as Police Brutality you should remember your rights. You can also ask for resistance when or if you are being detained, handcuffed or dealing with any sort of police matter. You are then able to to contact your lawyer and bring up charges against the Police department. Don't be afraid with doing these simple things you are lowering the number of police brutality cases.

Police Brutality Statistics

As we all know police may be known for "Defending" the people. Is this true? well from the looks of the chart there is more incidents with the police not doing their duties. Showing in the chart there are more cases with the police brutalizing civilians. As you look at the chart you decide exactly what you think the cops actually do more. All that can be said is that the police take their positions and abuse them. They are suppose to have the duty to serve the people but yet they are beating, killing and treating them wrongfully. Police Brutality

On November 8th, 2010 a man by the name of Derrick Jones was gun down by an officer while down on the floor. It was said that the officers only fired because they thought that Jones was reaching for a weapon. After investigation it was found out that Jones was not armed and did not commit any crimes. Due to the death of Mr. Jones a protest was held November 11,2010 at 3 p.m. with a rally in front of Jone's barbershop on Bancroft Avenue, in Oakland. As many people began to gather the first hundred people gathered to hear speakers, the mood of the crowd the mood of the crowd began to get worst.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi is a pro-democracy opposition leader in Myanmar. Which was formally known as Burma. Aung was under the detention center for almost two decades straight. She was under house arrest  until 2002 and was then arrested again a year later. She was known for gathering crowds everywhere she went. Then in August 2009 she was later convicted of violating the terms of her house arrest after a crazy event in which an American man swam across a lake and spent at least one night on the grounds of her home. She was arrested on numerous occasions due to crowds gathering to celebrate her accomplishments.

Why Do Police Abuse Their Authority?

There is No actual answer to why they do it. But what can be said is that many civilians are tired of it and want it to stop. Many civilians came out to rally against the Kentucy Police Department after they shot and killed an African American male by the name of James Taylor. He was shot 11 times while he was in handcuffs in February 2003. Police tend to get away with things such as this because those who are apart of the government is to weak to take a stand. There are many cases where Police Officers have shot and killed innocent people and are easily acquitted. So There is the answer I guess. They abuse their authority because there isn't anyone powerful enough to convict them.
